Elements of Interior Design
Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or “starting from scratch” with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of design include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.
Element #1: Space
Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively.
Element #2: Line
The lines in a room are second only to color in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is straight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasizing the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create.
• Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture.
• Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms.
• Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals.
• Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine.

Designing Your Home Office
Once you have taken the plunge and decided to work from home you are going to need to consider your working environment. Too many people think that working from home means that they can effectively handle phone calls from the kitchen table, or work well into the night cuddled up in front of the television. And while you may be able to get away with this type of working style once in awhile, you will need to design a home office space that is effective and efficient.
A well designed home office will allow you to be more organized, more productive and definitely more professional. There are a few things that you will need to consider when you are designing your space. Do you entertain clients in your office? If so, you will want a separate entrance to your home office. It is not very professional to have clients walk through your kitchen with dirty dishes in the sink in order to get to your office.
Even if you do not host clients in your office, you should strongly consider the benefits of having a separate space for your office. You will feel more professional if you have a designated room or space for your office rather than a corner of the living room. This will also allow you to tune out distractions such as the children, or the television. When you are working, close the door and focus on work.

Designing The Perfect Bathroom For Your Needs
Often times the design of bathrooms are not given much consideration. Many people focus on the décor of the bathroom, while neglecting the functional design. Of course, depending on the type of bathroom you’re building, you will need to keep different factors in mind. This article will consider the design factors for three different types of bathrooms.
Master bathrooms
The design and functionality of master bathrooms vary widely. Some are relatively basic, while others have a whirlpool or other features. Some are even divided into multiple rooms! You just have to decide what features you want yours to have!
Commercial restrooms
When designing commercial bathrooms, two major factors to consider are privacy and sanitation. Privacy is usually solved one of two ways – for single stall restrooms, a lock on the door; for multi stall restrooms, locks on the stall doors. That way it’s easy to tell which stalls are in use.
As far as sanitation is concerned, one feature that will help a lot is tile floors and walls, and a drain in the floor. That way, you can just bleach and hose down the entire bathroom on a regular basis. Any feature that will make sanitation easier or simpler should be given consideration.
Of course, durability should be a given in commercial bathrooms. People will treat fixtures roughly, so they should be built to withstand the abuse.

Various styles of recessed lighting are not really a new ingenuity, but in our time they are appearing in places you may not have encountered them before – such as out on a patio, for example.
Seeing a subtle yet, effectual recessed patio lighting, powered partially by solar power for the first time is indeed a model that get’s the inspiration going for getting into to light up the outside of your home as well.

Design
The word ‘design’ is multifaceted. It can refer to plans, proposals or creative endeavors. Design surrounds us in every aspect of our life–homes, buildings, city planning, vehicles, art, theater, clothing, and toys. Even food has a design element, presentation. So, design is what makes anything functional, appealing and attractive. It has aesthetic functions that result from inspiration, research, and modeling.
To some the sense of design is ingrained in their genes, while others acquire a design sense through rigorous training.
The principles to be used will of course depend upon whether one is looking at architectural, automotive, computer or machinery design, which are scientific in nature and have different aims, or communication design, which is applied to advertisements, books, magazines, websites, and so on.
In the case of communication design, it must have a focal point, everything else being secondary. It must follow certain simple rules: the design must be simple and clutter free, it must represent clearly the theme or element for which it is in use, it must be functional and have a visual hierarchy. The size, color, texture, and types must be varied to create depth and contrast.
The keys are: alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast. The spaces must create depth and the colors harmony. Good design is said to be 98% common sense.
